An Interview with Darra Sargent
Q: Hello Darra, how would you describe your design style?
My design style is heavily influenced by design of the past! I love creating work inspired by different decades in design, but my personal favorite decades are the 1960s and 70s. I try to bring the feeling that design had during that era to a modern audience. Color is the most important part of art in my opinion and I love including a rainbow of some kind in every one of my pieces as my little signature touch. My go-to color palettes are also heavily influenced by vintage home decor and fashion. I'd say overall my style is vintage inspired, colorful art to make you feel groovy.
Q: How have your personal experiences or personality influenced your design ideas?
Ever since I was a kid I was always amazed by everything vintage. My parents were huge hippies, my dad was a drummer and our home was always full of art from his glory years whether that was music, fashion, decor etc. Growing up I wanted to be a singer and music was a big part of our family. I remember sitting with my dad and listening to vinyl records, being totally in love with the album covers. I think about those album covers, the concert posters, the style of that time when Iām creating. I feel like my style allows me to mix my love for music and design in a way that feels authentic to me and my life.
Q: How do you incorporate your personal style into home design projects?
I have two sons so it's hard to make the house my own right now haha. It's full of kids toys and sports equipment. But, I do use rugs to bring my style into the space! I also hang my art on the walls, and I have mostly vintage furniture. I think squeezing in little pieces of you where you can while you're raising young kids is so important!
Q: What drew you to collaborate with our rug brand?
I loved the style of Lany Space rugs! When you all reached out to send me one I knew I had to ask for a collaboration because our styles mesh together so well. The floral rug I got from you all has really helped make my space feel more like me, and I hope that the rugs that I designed can do that for other people! Rugs can change an entire room!
Q: What was your first impression of Lany Space rugs and our style?
I loved it! I could tell that the designs were very art forward. ''Not your mamas rugs'' if that makes sense haha. They were very modern, but in a warm vintage way.
Q: Could you share the story or concept behind the collection you designed for us? What inspired the design of this rug collection?
I always say my art has two styles, flowers or space lol. For this collection I leaned into the space side of my style. When I designed my youngest sons nursery I wanted it to be space themed, but not in the traditional ''boy space room'' way. I wanted it to be more whimsical, vintage, colorful and fun. These are all rugs I could have used for his room. I was channeling that energy when I made these designs. I wanted them to be able to be used in a kids room, but also a home office or living room. They are spacey but in a more modern and mature way.
Q: Among the pieces in this collection, which design is your favorite, and why?
That's a tough one because I really love them all! I'd have to say the rainbow wave runner. Runners are something that tend to be really dated, because for a long time young people weren't using them as much as the generation before. They were geared towards the order generation who was most likely to buy them. I love seeing funky runners and I can't wait to put this one in my kitchen! I tend to use rainbow waves a lot in my work so that rug feels the most ''me'' as well.
Q: If you could sum up this collection in three words, what would they be?
Colorful, vintage, celestial.
