An interview with Sophie Deller

Q: We'd love for you to start by introducing yourself:

A: I'm Sophie Deller, an experimental illustrator and photographer based in London. My practice spans multiple mediums, but at its core it's about exploring colour, shape, and texture as a way of responding to everyday objects and surroundings.

Q: How would you describe your design style?

A: My design style sits between abstraction and representation. I work intuitively, starting with simple shapes or colours and allowing the composition to evolve naturally. The result is expressive, playful work that feels balanced yet organic.

Q: How have your personal experiences or personality influenced your design ideas?

A: My work is shaped by observation and curiosity. Moving through different environments — from natural landscapes to urban spaces — has influenced the forms and rhythms I'm drawn to. I enjoy embracing imperfection and spontaneity, which reflects my belief that creativity should feel open and exploratory rather than fixed.

Q: How do you incorporate your personal style into home design projects?

A: I think about how colour, texture, and shape interact within a space. My aim is to create designs that feel grounded yet expressive — pieces that bring warmth, movement, and personality into a room without overpowering it.

Q: What drew you to collaborate with our rug brand?

A: Lany Space's approach to rugs as functional art really resonated with me. I was drawn to the bold use of colour, the emphasis on craftsmanship, and the idea of rugs as statement pieces that transform how a space feels.

Q: What was your first impression of Lany Space rugs and our style?

A: My first impression was how vibrant and expressive the rugs felt. The designs have a strong visual presence while still being versatile enough to live comfortably in different interiors.

Q: Could you share the story or concept behind the collection you designed for us?

A: The collection was inspired by distilling everyday forms and landscapes into simplified shapes and flowing compositions. I wanted the designs to feel rhythmic and intuitive — almost like visual pauses within a space — where colour and form gently interact.

Q: Among the pieces in these collections, which design is your favorite, and why?

A: I particularly like all of my floral artworks They flow nicely and I believe they work in many different environments.

Q: If you could sum up this collection in three words, what would they be?

A: Expressive, Bold, Bright.

This Multicolor Modern Abstract Floral Rug gives strong retro poster energy, with chunky color blocks and a simplified flower shape that feels straight out of the 60s and 70s. The warm reds and oranges make the room feel instantly brighter, even if the rest of your space is calm and neutral. It comes in 5'×7' and 7'×10', so it works as a living room anchor or a bedroom statement. Try it with mid century modern or retro eclectic decor, think walnut wood, cream walls, and a few playful accents to match one of the colors.
