From Composition to Color: Jakob Mizrahi's World in Rugs

Kerry Wang | May 27, 2025

Jakob Mizrahi is a designer based just outside Copenhagen, where the vibrant mix of bold colors and unique shapes are part of daily life. His approach to design is inspired by his background in classical piano and self-taught furniture making, bringing a rhythmic and intuitive energy to everything he creates. In his collaboration with Lany Space, Jakob translates his sculptural furniture ideas into striking rug designs that are as full of personality as they are of color. If you're curious to peek inside his colorful maximalist Copenhagen home, you can check out a great feature on it through Apartment Therapy.

Now, let's take a closer look at the ideas that shaped Jakob's designs and how his collaboration with Lany Space came to life.

An interview with Jakob Mizrahi

Q: How would you describe your design style?

My style is definitely full of odd shapes and bold colors, heavily based on intuition and improvisation. I have a background as a trained classical pianist and composer, and I still approach design in a similar way—just with different tools. I work with a theme, a few elements, and their balance, energy, and interaction with each other. It is very important to me that each piece I create has its own energy and a distinct, recognizable DNA—just like a great piece of music.

Q: How have your personal experiences or person
ality influenced your design ideas?

I first got into design around 2014-2015 when I rediscovered my mom's old 1980s interior magazines in a local charity shop. I was so blown away by what I saw that I started designing and building colorful furniture in my shed—despite having no prior experience in furniture-making.

At the time, my style was heavily influenced by the Memphis movement and 1980s aesthetics in general, even though mid-century modern (MCM) was at its peak, and interiors were mostly devoid of color.

Today, the 1980s and Memphis are no longer the main focus of my designs. Over the past few years, I feel like I've moved on and developed my own style, which revolves around exploring interesting shapes and colors.

Q: How do you incorporate your personal style into home design projects?

My interior design projects are just as intuitive as my approach to furniture design. I typically start with only a rough theme and figure out how to develop it as I go—much like composing a movement for a string quartet.

Q: What drew you to collaborate with our rug brand?

I see myself primarily as a designer, and it has always been my dream to create all kinds of products. Collaborating with Lany Space was an exciting opportunity to design something beyond furniture—something I hope to do much more of in the future.

Q: What was your first impression of Lany Space rugs and our style?

I loved the playfulness and boldness of the designs—the willingness to be different. It's something that big design companies could learn from since they often play it too safe just to maximize profit.

Q: Could you share the story or concept behind the collection you designed for us?

It was very important for me to maintain the design DNA of my furniture. Early in the process, I had the idea of drawing inspiration from my own furniture designs and translating them into rugs.

Q: Among the pieces in this collection, which design is your favorite, and why?

I really like the round rug. It's based on the top of one of my side tables, and I think it works surprisingly well as a rug without needing any modifications.

Q: If you could sum up this collection in three words, what would they be?

Playful, Colorful, Joyful.

The Pink and Blue Asymmetrical Checker Rug does things differently.

At the top, a soft pink dome adds a gentle curve.

In the middle, a bold black and white checkerboard runs straight through.

At the bottom, a cool blue stripe cuts across, giving the rug a fresh, playful finish.

The shapes are unexpected, but they fit together in a way that feels clean and full of life.

The colors stay sharp, and the layout keeps your eyes moving without feeling busy.

Sized at 2 by 5 feet (61 by 152 cm), this rug fits hallways, gallery walls, or any narrow space that needs something bold and bright.

The Abstract Circle Rug is Jakob Mizrahi's quietest design, focusing on calm over contrast.

One side has delicate vertical stripes, like thoughts lined up in order. The other side is a soft, open curve, feeling relaxed and undisturbed.

Each colorway brings a different feeling:
Mint Yellow feels light and fresh with a cool undertone.
Pink Lilac offers a soft, pastel clarity.
Pink Teal adds depth without being overwhelming.

All three colors blend seamlessly with the space around them, creating harmony.

At 6 feet in diameter, this rug fits perfectly under a round dining table, in a reading corner, or anywhere you want balance. The shape is simple but striking, holding attention gently and adding clarity without being loud.
